This powerful new installation was unveiled at South Ayrshire’s Field of Heroes commemorative event in Wellington Square, Ayr, Scotland, from 1 to 13 July 2026, marking the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

The horses represent the millions of horses, mules and donkeys used during wartime to transport artillery, ammunition, food, medical supplies and essential equipment across churned and muddy battlefields. Many pulled heavy gun carriages and ammunition limbers under enemy fire, while others carried wounded soldiers to safety or delivered vital supplies to the front line.

Military dogs performed many essential roles. They carried messages, located wounded soldiers, acted as sentries, detected danger and transported supplies. Smaller dogs could navigate narrow communication trenches, carrying messages, medical supplies, cigarettes and tobacco to troops in places larger animals could not reach.

Carrier pigeons also provided a vital lifeline. When telephone lines were destroyed and runners could not get through, they carried crucial messages and intelligence between the front line and headquarters. Their remarkable homing instinct and determination helped save countless lives.

The installation is a tribute to all animals who served, suffered and sacrificed alongside those caught up in the devastation of war.
