The Falklands Tribute at Nothe Fort
A powerful tribute overlooking Weymouth Harbour
In November 2025, Standing with Giants brought its moving Falklands Tribute to Nothe Fort, the historic 19th century coastal fort overlooking Weymouth Harbour.
Positioned across the parade ground and along the fort’s dramatic ramparts, the installation created a powerful place for visitors to pause, reflect and remember all those affected by the Falklands War.
The tribute featured 258 life sized silhouettes:
• 255 military personnel
• Three civilians who tragically lost their lives during the conflict
• 258 commemorative poppy wreaths, one placed alongside each figure
Together, they represented the lives lost during the 1982 conflict, transforming the historic fort into a striking landscape of remembrance.
Remembering the Falklands
More than four decades after the conflict, the Falklands War remains within living memory for thousands of veterans, their families and the wider Armed Forces community.
The installation gave visitors an opportunity to learn more about the people behind the history, to reflect on their service and sacrifice, and to understand the lasting impact of the conflict.
Standing above Weymouth Harbour, the silhouettes formed an unforgettable sight. From the parade ground to the ramparts, each figure appeared to stand watch over the coastline, creating a poignant connection between the fort’s military history and the stories being remembered.
Veterans at the heart of the tribute
Falklands veterans played an important role throughout the exhibition, meeting visitors and sharing their personal experiences of the conflict.
The official opening was attended by the Standing with Giantd Teaam , veterans, Richard Hislop, Falkland Islands Government Representative, and the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, who formally opened the exhibition.
These conversations brought the installation to life, allowing visitors to hear personal stories of courage, comradeship, loss and remembrance directly from those who served.
For many veterans, the tribute also became a place to reconnect with former comrades, remember friends and reflect together.
A tribute created with care
As a Grade II listed historic monument, Nothe Fort required every part of the installation to be carefully planned and fully removable.
No drilling into the fort’s stonework or historic surfaces was permitted. Standing with Giants therefore developed a specially designed installation system that allowed the silhouettes to be safely displayed without causing any damage.
Protective materials were placed beneath the figures, while specially made supports secured them across the parade ground and along the ramparts. Every element was removed after the exhibition, leaving the historic site exactly as it had been found.
Although much of this careful work remained unseen by visitors, it allowed the tribute to sit respectfully within the fort while retaining the scale and emotional impact for which Standing with Giants is known.
An unforgettable visitor experience
Alongside the outdoor installation, visitors could explore interpretation displays, watch a documentary film about Standing with Giants and discover more about the Falklands War and the stories represented by the silhouettes.
Professional aerial footage captured the extraordinary sight of the figures standing along the ramparts above Weymouth Harbour, helping the tribute reach audiences far beyond the fort itself.
Despite being open for only 18 days during November, the exhibition welcomed approximately 8,000 visitors.
The response demonstrated the continuing importance of remembrance and the powerful effect that art can have in connecting people with history.
We will remember them
The Falklands Tribute at Nothe Fort brought together remembrance, history and personal testimony within one of Weymouth’s most significant historic landmarks.
Each silhouette represented a person.
Each wreath marked a life.
Together, they ensured that their stories, service and sacrifice would not be forgotten.
