‘I WANT TO LIVE’

Salisbury will once again stand with Ukraine as it hosts the Standing with Giants installation ‘I Want to Live’ in the Guildhall Square, marking the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.

 February 2023 until March 17th

The installation travels to Bournemouth next - watch this space!

As we approach the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a fitting tribute has been unveiled by The Mayor of Salisbury, along with the help of Ukrainian refugees, City Council Officers, and the public. This installation shows our unwavering solidarity to the people suffering in Ukraine.

Standing 13ft high and made from 15mm thick laser cut steel, the tribute depicts the silhouettes of a soldier holding a baby whilst leading a refugee mother and child to safety and has been previously exhibited in Oxford city centre. This relevant installation is the brainchild of Dan Barton, founder of the Oxfordshire community project, Standing with Giants. The design was a collaboration with artist Peter Naylor. Dan feels imagery plays a huge part in war; it can send a powerful message to aggressors and show a meaningful message of solidarity to those in need.

The Salisbury Community Hub for Ukraine and The Bearr Trust are two significant projects that our installation will be helping to raise awareness and funds for. There is a display board with QR codes to enable charitable donations to be made.

Jane Ebel, Organiser of the Hub, has been instrumental in bringing the installation to Salisbury and has said ‘Ordinary people the length and breadth of the County have been incredibly hospitable in sharing their homes with Ukrainians. Now we can all show our support by standing together at this tribute and during the period of Lent reach out and show compassion to those who are suffering’.

Thank you to Salisbury City Council, Mayor of Salisbury Tom Corbin and Jane Ebel from the Hub.
